Heat Reliefe

Introducing Project Tapan

Every summer, as temperatures rise beyond bearable limits, thousands of people and animals across India are pushed into dangerous  onditions without the protection they need. From sunburned feet to dehydration, from birds collapsing mid-flight to exhausted workers fainting at their jobs, the season becomes a daily struggle for survival, especially for those with the fewest resources. Project Tapan by Raise India Foundation is a response to this challenge. It is an ongoing effort to bring comfort, relief, and dignity to the lives most affected by extreme heat — including both people and animals.

We have worked across streets, slums, and open labor areas, distributing slippers to protect the feet of barefoot children and workers, placing earthen pots filled with water in high-exposure zones, and providing fresh fruit and hydration to sanitation workers, rickshaw pullers, and garbage collectors. We have installed large commercial umbrellas at roadside tea stalls, construction sites, and vendor corners, creating shaded spaces where there were none. For animals — including stray dogs, birds, and monkeys — we have ensured access to clean water, cooling fruits and care during the hottest days, often the difference between life and collapse.

Why Project Tapan Matters
Why Project Tapan Matters

India’s heatwaves have become more intense and frequent in recent years. In 2024 alone, several parts of the country crossed 45°C, with the highest temperature touching an alarming 52.9°C. The consequences of such extreme weather are hardest on those living in poverty, daily wage workers, street vendors, homeless individuals — people who work in the open and sleep under the sky. At the same time, animals suffer silently, walking on burning roads or going without water for days. Their suffering is invisible, but just as urgent.

Project Tapan exists to ensure that summer relief is not a privilege, but a right, a basic expression of humanity and shared survival.

Our Impact So Far

Over the past two years, Project Tapan has touched thousands of lives. We have distributed more than 3,000 pairs of slippers to those walking barefoot in sweltering heat. We’ve distributed over 1,500 water pots in parks, market lanes, and residential alleys for animals and birds. More than 2,500 earthen pots have been handed out to rickshaw pullers and roadside vendors who otherwise have no source of clean drinking water while they work long hours in direct sunlight.

We’ve installed hundreds of commercial umbrellas to create instant relief zones, and provided hydration kits filled with water and fruit to workers at risk of heatstroke. Our awareness drives have also educated local communities about the importance of water, rest, and animal welfare during the summer.

Each of these efforts may seem small, a glass of water, a spot of shade, a cool pair of slippers but when repeated across a city, they begin to transform how entire communities endure the season.

Not Just for Humans
Not Just for Humans

Project Tapan is one of the few summer relief campaigns in the country that is as attentive to animals as it is to people. We see birds panting in the midday heat, dogs resting on overheated pavements, struggling to find a patch of shade and we act. Our volunteers regularly refill water pots, install feeding stations, and encourage locals to share the responsibility of care. In doing so, we promote not just action, but awareness.

Project Tapan is not just a seasonal initiative. It is a reminder that kindness multiplies, and that in times of crisis, the smallest gesture can mean everything. Every act of relief we create is a testament to shared humanity and respect for all living beings.

This summer, let us not turn away from the suffering we see. Let us become the reason someone or something finds a moment of comfort.
